In my 9 years of being a social media manager and consultant, I’ve heard from MANY that the photo or the video is the easy part for them. Take a cute photo and add a filter, create a fun graphic and download, or film a quick Reel, and you’re ready to post!
Captions, on the other hand?
Not so easy, for some.
Believe it or not, Instagram captions are one of the best ways to 1) connect with your audience, and 2) market your brand. Through the generous allotment of words you can use, you can accomplish a lot in each post!
Today, we’re breaking down exactly how to write the perfect Instagram caption that will interest your followers and encourage them to engage via likes and comments!
When scrolling their feed, your followers (or random visitors) won’t see your entire caption right away. They will see a short preview and have the choice to click “read more” or scroll on.
If the first part of your Instagram caption (which is previewed) doesn’t captivate them enough to click “read more,” they are going to keep on scrolling – meaning it’s SUPER important to have a great hook.
Some great ideas for a hook include bold, provocative statements such as “I CAN’T DO IT ANYMORE,” leading into details about how you can’t stand to watch other female entrepreneurs struggle the way you did and how you can help, or questions such as “ARE YOU READY TO DITCH THE 9-5?” leading into your biz coaching services for entrepreneurs.
Anything that isn’t misleading, is entertaining, AND gets them to open the rest of your caption is great material!
Chances are, you aren’t running your business Instagram account for the heck of it – you’ve started it in order to grow your business, make connections, promote your services, etc…
So, why not tell your followers exactly what you want them to do (and give them a reason to do it) in your Instagram caption?
Include a call to action statement in your caption that offers your audience value and encourages them to do something that helps you. This could be entering their email address for a freebie, signing up for a free one-day coaching session, etc… Be specific and offer incentives for best results!
Don’t end your Instagram caption abruptly by saying “That’s all from me!” or no closing at all. Instead, tie your closing into your call to action with phrases like “See you there!” or “I can’t wait to see your message in my inbox!” so your audience knows you don’t want this to be the end of their engagement with you!
This will give them that final nudge they may need to follow through with the call to action, and could be the difference between a lost customer and an amazing new client!
We can’t wait to see the amazing captions you create on Instagram.
